|
Unit 14 Private Road 4 Colwick Industrial Estate Nottingham NG4 2JT HQ is a temporary space rented for Hinterland throughout October 2007. This is to showcase some of the new photography commissions undertaken in the summer curated by Victor Simao. HQ is situated amongst the literal hinterland which is Colwick Industrial Park and adjacent to the city's out of site services such as waste management depots, storage units, factories and garages. Visitors are encouraged to take the bus out of town to this little known pocket of the city and walk though the industrial estate to HQ. The site is also very close to the Trent itself which can be easily accessed on foot or by bike. Coming soon to HQ... Mark Excell 19-28 October, 2007 Open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12noon - 6pm __________________________________________________________ Mark Excell presents a series of original work featuring an intriguing study of waterside environments and industrial pockets of cityscapes. Excell imparts an artistic estrangement to seemingly archetypal places by creating a layer of mystique and fascination to his sizaeble images. ![]() Mark Excell Work in progress, 2007 Through taking images of the familiar and “making them strange”-whether through poetic devices or by unconventional camera angles - Soviet writer and pamphleteer, Viktor Shklovsky, argued the public could be aroused from its dulled perceptions of the world in order to “recover the sensation of life.” As he described it, the function of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar,’ to make forms problematic, to increase the difficulty and length of perception. It is this enchanting obstinacy I see within the work of Mark Excell, who uses this technique to great effect in this new work. Last chance to see Sian Stammers exhibition: This week only, closes this Sunday Sian Stammers 5-14 October, 2007 Open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12noon - 6pm __________________________________________________________ Sian Stammers presents new photographs of the landscape found beside the riverside path, which winds from Clifton Bridge to Clifton Grove in Nottingham. This ragged wasteland, to the artist, represents a ‘falling away’ from the busy city to a brown-field space overtaken by nature and a different pace of life. Stammers describes this journey as a ‘decent from city time’, to a place not usually sought out for its own sake by visitors. ![]() Sian Stammers Work in progress, 2007 For the Big Day Out, Hinterland screened Stammers’ new Super8 film inspired by a passage in D.H. Lawrence’s ‘Sons and Lovers’. The newly commissioned film is inspired by a climactic part of the book, where the main characters take a walk from the Nottingham City Centre to Clifton Grove. Stammers explores how the topography of landscape in the novel sits alongside landscape as factual place. How to get to HQ HQ is most easily accessible via bus. On Weekdays the Link 2 travels to the edge of the Industrial park every 10-12 minutes from the city centre. Travellers should alight at Hillary's Blinds and take a 15 minute stroll through the industrial estate. Look out for signs to K & K Kars and the Wastecycle plant. At weekends the less frequent 44 & 45 buses stop nearby on Daleside Road East. This service runs every 30 minutes to 1 hour. ![]() Venue Key click map for a bigger version HQ.
