The River Trent has approximately thirty tributaries, depending on which source one consults. Each element in the Hinterland project represents the different streams feeding into a larger body of water. As well as being a metaphor for naturally occurring streams, an artist’s individual project also often ‘pays tribute’ to the geographical location beside the River Trent or as part of the industrial hinterland of Nottingham city centre. Since Hinterland started in September 2006, 15 artists works/commissions/events were incorporated as 'tributaries' into the wider project. Hinterland continues to support artists in 2007-8 with another series of temporary events including site specific installations, workshops, study groups and new commissions.
